A hairdressing student who demonstrated strong entrepreneurial skills to bring in more profit for her salon has been awarded the Best Workplace Student prize at Northampton College’s annual awards ceremony.
Jessica Womack (pictured) landed the award, sponsored by NEP, at the ceremony on 27 November in recognition of her performance at Stars in Bozeat where her training enabled her to increase her own client price list and take on new customers.
Adele Barnett, Head of the School of Commercial Enterprise at Northampton College, said: “Jessica completed her Level 2 course in Barbering in a very short space of time. She always had a model ready for visits from her workplace assessor, showing strong commitment to excellent preparation and getting the most out of her course.”
Jessica is now working towards her Level 3 Women’s Hairdressing course.
She was among the 69 award winners at the annual awards ceremony which recognised the hard work of students across a range of areas including best apprentice, the best progress in maths, best overall progress and the most public spirited student.
A stunning display of talent
Principal Pat Brennan-Barratt said: “A stunning display of talent and determination has been showcased at this event. It has been a real privilege to hear so many inspiring stories and to hear about the progress our students have made, both personally and academically.”
Over 250 guests attended the event at Northampton College’s Booth Lane Campus and the 13 themed awards were each sponsored by a local business. These sponsors were Opus Energy, Saints Rugby Club, Briggs & Forrester, NEP, Recol Engineering, Coca-Cola Enterprises, XPO Logistics, South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP), Hopwells, Knorr-Bremse, Oakleaf Care and Church’s Shoes.
Finally, the Katy Wright Award was presented to mature student Alison Ward who joined the Access to Health Professions course with the goal of becoming a midwife. This special award is given in memory of former Northampton College tutor, Katy, who sadly died three years ago after a long illness. Katy’s parents, John and Anne Wright, have endowed the college with a fund to support an annual award in their daughter’s name.
